Trophies As Symbols Of Achievements
They are perhaps the supreme mark of success. Trophies measure accomplishment. Most of the time, the bigger the trophy, the higher the achievement. From the biggest of competitions to the smallest of matches, from major sports events to a local elementary school’s Spelling Bee match, trophies are everywhere.
The word trophy came from the Greek term “tropaion” which came from the verb “trope,” which means “to rout.” Back in ancient times in Greece, people used to make trophies on the battlefields of victorious battles. Their bases were inscribed with the details of the battle, along with an inscription to the god that they believed assisted them win the fight. To destroy them then was considered a blasphemy.
In ancient Rome, trophies were exceedingly big and were often placed on pillars and arches. Instead of being a homage to the victors and the gods on the battlefield, the Romans wanted them made in Rome.
Not a great deal is known about its history during the Middle Ages. Nevertheless, it is believed that they were used as accolades for sporting events in the late 1600s. The usual shapes used then were silver goblets and two-handled sterling cups.
Today, trophies come in various kinds and sizes. Although cups and chalices are still prevalent, they now come in almost every shape conceivable, such as stars, human forms, abstract, and animal forms.
Instead of silver and gold, materials used nowadays include steel, pewter, crystal, and plastic. They are much less pricey and can be mass created.
Trophies aren’t just handed out during sports competitions. They are also presented in recognition of individual or group achievement. The Academy Awards, a renowned Hollywood awards events, is a great example. Individual abilities like acting, directing and producing, as well as group efforts, such as best film and cast, are acknowledged with a trophy shaped like a human being.
A trophy is not just a reward for a specific achievement, be it in sports, acting, discovery, and other skills. It symbolizes triumph and position. Getting a trophy doesn’t just mean being able to outdo your opponents in a game or being the leader in your field of expertise. It also means being part of the legacy that comes with the trophy.
