Toner is the ink in the printer, copier or fax machine which is responsible for the print. This comes ready for installation, direct into the machine, inside a specific cartridge. It is always recommended that the correct unit be used for specific machines.

Printers and copiers can have their working lives extended by using the correct toner cartridge, and it’s important to know when these need replacing. It’s common for the machine to give a warning that the toner is running out before it actually needs replacing. An LED lights up, despite the fact that it is still printing ok.

When this happens you can be assured that you can still keep printing a few hundred documents until the printing becomes poor and the toner runs out. To get the maximum number of copies take the cartridge out of the machine and shake it. This will disturb the remaining toner and save you some cash. On a large print runhowever, it’s better to replace the cartridge if the low level indicator is showing.

Before starting a big print job, always make sure you have a spare toner cartridge to hand, as it is incredibly irritating to find that you have no replacement in the middle of a big print run, should the toner runsout.

I hate that feeling of having to get out 100 packs for an Annual General Meeting, only to find that in the middle of it all, you have 2000 blank copies of ruined paper and a 2 hour deadline, but no cartridge.

Don’t remove these ink cartridges unless they have to be replaced – this is important. Toner cartridges are not environmentally friendly, and are a potential health hazard. If you do spill it, you should immediately wash it off your skin and be aware that it is almost impossible to remove from clothing

Pay attention to the expiry dates on toner cartridges as they are valid even if they have remained unopened, and locate a recycling centre who can dispose of them properly. As some recycling centres give money from their operations to charities, it may be worth contacting some local branches to see if they can help you out.

No matter how interested you are in finding out how toner cartridges work, do not try and dismantle them as there are always specific local rules as to disposal. They need to be recycled correctly as they cannot be put in the ground, due to contamination issues.

Be careful when handling toner ink cartridges. Pay attention to the manufacturers guidelines and you will have no problems. Should a problem arise, you should either simply phone the toner manufacturer or a recycling company for instructions.
