That guy is a Master Printer, there is a lot of skill in doing what he is doing. My Father was a letterpress Printer, my brother was a linotype operator and compositor. Me, I broke my dads heart and became a litho printer. I did operate a Heidelberg Platen for a few years though, and let me tell you its a lot harder than offset.

Your father is correct. Problem with Letterpress…makeready time was very lengthy, especially 4 color. Offset can be made ready in a fraction of the time.
Our print shop …
Our print shop still offers letterpress. According to my father letterpress isn’t supposed to mash into the sheet like that. He said he was always taught to hit the paper as lightly as possible in order to avoid that because it was a sign of a printer that didn’t know what they were doing when it was debossed that much.

It’s so sad that …
It’s so sad that there is little or no appreciation for letter press or engraving. We usually seek out these printing processes for wedding or other special invitations but ignore the elegance and quality anytime else.
As consumers we discount quality for price and we no longer even know what quality is. Even if we do see the quality we discount it in favor of cost.
I’ve been in the business for over 30 years. I I remember letterpress and engraving shops where my dad printed.

These old letter …
These old letter presses still make a better score\perf than any other machine I have seen in the industry. Most shops that have them, that is their primary pourpose.
I remember as a boy going over to dads prinshop and seeing the linetype machine. Watching the guy handfeed sheets into the press kinda sent shivers down my spine.
