There are a number of uses for graphic overlays and we come into contact with a number of them in our daily lives. They can be made to be scuff and scratch resistant as people will be touching them continuously depending on the items use. A microwave, for example, may require an overlay to be resistant to moisture, scratches and scuffs and will likely be laminated to enhance the durability of the overlay as they will be touched numerous times throughout the life of the overlay.

Graphic overlays have so many uses and without them, we would be back to having large knobs and buttons of years past and not the smooth designs of covered buttons that can be found on items that use these overlays. They can protect the sensitive internal workings from environmental concerns as well as from damage from misuse and graphic overlays help to explain different functions to the operator.
